Dear Mr. Franz,
My
name is Dana Kemp and I am a Coordinating Producer with National
Geographic
Television. I sent an email to info@alcione.org as well (I
pasted
this email below). What my email doesn't expand upon is that
we
are
taking a somewhat hard look at ufo evidence, much like you do. We
would
like to include some misconceived examples of ufo sightings, like the
Bay
of Campeche oil well sighting. I just spoke with Robert Sheaffer,
who
wrote
the article in the Skeptical Inquirer about the Bay of Campeche oil
well
flames. We are very interested in including this
as part of our
documentary
on ufos. Our goal is to recreate the event, in an airplane,
with
as accurate an infrared system as possible to show how is can be
misconstrued
as a ufo. I would love to start a correspondence
with you
on
this and get your input in this project, if you are willing.
We
are also interested in your thoughts on the July 1991 mass ufo sighting.
I look forward to hearing from you. I do appreciate it.

To
Whom it May Concern:
My
name is Dana Kemp and I am a Coordinating Producer for National
Geographic
Television. We are currently producing a yet-to-be-titled
National
Geographic Channel series about all things paranormal. Each show
deals
with a particular unexplained phenomenon, such as ghosts, bigfoot,
and
ufos. We will examine our topics from both a scientific and
mystical
standpoint,
and give people involved in researching the phenomenon their
due
to explain their experiences, beliefs, and evidence.
I am
contacting you because we are beginning to conduct story research for
our
show on ufos and are very interested in coming to Mexico for our
filming.
We are trying the determine what sort of ufo research is
currently
being done in your country and what your group, ALCIONE, is
doing.
If you wish, I would be delighted to begin a correspondence either
via
email or telephone, whichever is most convenient for you.
I thank you in advance for your kind response.

Dear Captain Franz,
Thank
you for your thoughtful email. First of all, I will be happy
to explain
the
angle of our show. The series is 10 parts - focusing on many
different
topics
(many of which are not decided yet). This is the 4th show in
production
- and it is of course about ufos. The executives here wanted
a
series that was different from the others - one that explores our topics
fairly,
and
one that doesn't sensationalize or "hype" paranormal things, and say,
"oh
look, every case is real" - like some people and shows do. We liked the
fact
that you had a more objective eye than other ufologists in your country.
Our
goal is to make a show that gives BOTH sides of the coin - and show
that
some of it can be explained, as with the Campeche sighting, but there
is
also some serious work going on in the ufology field as well. (We
are
trying
to find research that is currently being done in Mexico to include
also...
are you involved in anything like this at the moment? Do you happen
to
know Victor Quesada?) As National Geographic, we have to show both
sides
of the coin - the serious research, as well as the false alarms. I hope
that
this is in line with your thinking. The series producer was extremely
interested
in your website and your philosophy, so I think it could be a
good
match.
I think
that what we want to do could be very challenging. Since you are
a
pilot, we thought you might give good insight on our goals. I think we
can
accomplish
what we want in one or two days. I am assuming we would be
work
out of Carmen. Here is a list of our objectives (next week we are
hiring
a local person to help us start arranging things. His name is Isham
Randolph,
and I will copy him on this message):
1. Interview you about your work, your experiences and this matter.
2.
Obtain permission to air the infrared footage. (I hope that the
Mexican Air Force still owns this and that they have not given full
rights to Jaime Maussan)
3.
Take a flight that simulates the flight that the plane took, with infrared
capability to recreate the event. I think this might be difficult
to duplicate,
and I really doubt the Mexican Army will cooperate in taking us in one
of their craft so that we get it perfectly identical. Any thoughts?
4.
Interview the crew of the plane. Am I correct that there were
three
aboard? The pilot, co-pilot and infrared operator?
5. Get aerial shots of the Campeche oil rigs (can they be seen by land?)
This
is all I can think of for now. I will look forward to your response.
Perhaps
a little later this week we can arrange a phone call as well?
I
would like to include Isham Randolph on that call, since he will be
responsible
for helping us arrange things. So you know, we are hoping
to
come to Mexico sometime during the week of October 11.

Dana

I will be very glad to help as much as I can.

It
is very important to have National Geographic Television
interested
in paranormal or unexplained phenomenon. I hope this
recreation
is going to be serious and educative and not a skeptical
project.
I have to let you know I am a UFO end ET believer and have
had
some sightings and paranormal experiences. My skepticism
resides
as part of an investigator's rule and as result of that I exposed
some
UFO hoaxes and hoaxers. I hope you understand that.

Yes
I am willing to participate but I would like to know what the
project
is and all the data you can give me so I can arrange my flight
schedule.
> We
are also interested in your thoughts on the July 1991 mass ufo
sighting.
I'll be glad to explain my thoughts and experiences on that.
> I look forward to hearing from you. I do appreciate it.
I appreciate your interest in me and my work hopping to hear from you soon.

Fw: hello again

Hi Alejandro.
Thank
you so much for our conversation earlier today. Again, I am looking
forward
to our collaboration and hope that this project is a success.
Thank
you for all of your help so far.
I am
disappointed that I cannot seem to get the right infrared camera into
Mexico.
They explained to me that this technology is so "sensitive" and
"important"
that there are many hoops to jump through in terms of getting
it
into Mexico... they say that it would take weeks to get the correct import
documents
from the State Department in place. So, we are forced to look
at
less classified systems.
I spoke
with Ben in Minneapolis at www.infraredsolutions.com.
He looked
at
your website, with us on the phone, and spoke with his manager also.
They
both agreed that we could duplicate the images on your website,
but
I believe he means from closer in. It is most important for
us to match
the
images - if we need to compromise on distance from the oil wells, we are
OK
with that. But, that brings up the question of the 40 mile radius
that we
must
remain away from the oil wells. I will ask Isham call PEMEX
as soon
as
possible to try and see if we can get any closer from the air (maybe in
a
helicopter)
and stand on the platforms themselves.
Here is the infrared system we are looking into getting:
http://www.ashtead-technology.com/us/NonDestructive/Content/004_S.html
I think
the infrared part could be tricky. I look forward to hearing your
thoughts
on this. Also, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on which
airplane
to use and the PEMEX contact information.
Best,
Dana

Excuse me Alejandro.
I must have misunderstood.
I will have Isham find us a plane and lock it.
>From which airport are you coming to us from?
We can purchase you a plane ticket to where we are filming.

No,
recreation is supposed to be done in an airplane.
Choppers
don't fly very high.

Believe
me, I took pictures form a 120 miles distance
with
a SONY handycam.

This
is not a sight seen tour, it is supposed to be a
recreation.
Same altitude, same path, infrared video camera.

me know if you think a chopper is OK or if we must go with

No,
chopper is not a good idea, to make your project as much
closer
to the original it must be done as closer to reality.
I don't have any idea of the costs.

I wish I could help but that's not my area.

No
way the military are going to cooperate, they already have been
exposed
and won't do that again.

you know of any such plane or a pilot friend in Villahermosa who

No
Dana, I don't have any friend who can help. Myabe I can get
a
cessna 210 but I am not sure, I have to call a friend in Merida.
Best regards
Alejandro.
